Centro Updates – March 2024
On March 25th, Centro Romero proudly celebrated St. Oscar Romero Day, alongside our community partner Alianza Americas, at St. Augustine College. It was a profound ceremony, commemorating the death and honoring the legacy of Archbishop Romero, who dedicated his life to advocating for human rights in El Salvador before he was assassinated in 1980 at the onset of the Salvadoran civil war. It is in his name and legacy that we have served the Chicago immigrant and refugee community for the last 40 years. In this day in age, in which the needs of the displaced have never been greater, we strive everyday to follow in St. Romero’s footsteps, to promote human dignity for all, and to be a “voice for the voiceless.” You can check out our recap video of the event here.
Additionally, this month we were pleased to welcome Oscar Chacón, Executive Director of Alianza Americas, to our offices to give a talk to our staff on root causes of migration in Latin America and around the world. Oscar is a highly experienced policy analyst, and we are grateful for his expertise and his organization’s partnership.
Finally, we are proud to announce that we were selected as the winners of a $5000 video production grant from Birds Nest Foundation as a result of our recent narrative media work for our digital advocacy campaign Meeting the Moment. Learn more here.
