Fostering Empowerment: Children and Women Driving Positive Change Along Our Community
In March, Centro Romero staff honored International Women’s Day with visits to the consulates of Mexico and El Salvador in Chicago. These visits, alongside meetings with consulate leaders, served to honor the contributions of women in society, especially in the communities whom Centro Romero supports.
Additionally, Centro Romero’s Women’s Program also made a visit to the Mexican consulate in Chicago and held a special event to commemorate this important day. The Centro Romero Women’s Program has been providing dedicated support and counseling services to women in the Chicago immigrant community for over 22 years. This event at the Mexican consulate served to help promote gender equality and highlight the invaluable contributions of countless women in society.
In the spirit of the late Archbishop Oscar Romero, Centro Romero uplifts and supports the rights of women across the globe and pledges its continued support to specifically meet the needs of the women in Chicago’s immigrant and refugee communities.
Spring is in the air! This month, students in Centro Romero’s Youth Program welcomed the warmer weather by spending the day outside planting flowers in front of Centro’s main entrance. By working to create spaces that are beautiful and welcoming, Centro Romero strengthens the community and creates an environment where youth feel free to learn and express themselves in positive and creative ways.
The Youth Learning and Leadership Program has been a vital and integral pillar of Centro Romero’s mission throughout its tenure. Recently the program’s director, Susi Salgado, was honored with a Certificate of Appreciation from Chicago’s 24th Police District, where she works and represents Centro Romero, its clients, and their families as a District Advisory Council. Her hard work is a testament to the community focused approach that Centro Romero brings to every one of its programs.
With an eye on education at all levels, Centro Romero has also recently taken steps to cement a partnership between their youth program and UNAM Chicago, a satellite language school and cultural center for one of the largest and most prestigious public universities in Latin America. This month, Centro administrative staff were kindly accompanied by Vanessa Guevara, Consul of the Consulate General of El Salvador in Chicago, on a visit to the school. Leaders at UNAM Chicago discussed their support of Centro Romero’s Youth Program, and even issued an invitation for any young creative minds to participate in their upcoming art projects.
