DV PHONE INTAKE WORKER
& WALK-IN CRISIS INTERVENTION COUNSELOR

POSITION SUMMARY

The Domestic Violence Program Telephone DV Phone Intake Worker & Walk-in Crisis Intervention Counselor, working under the supervision of the Domestic Violence Program Manager and in concert with other staff, is responsible for providing individual services for IPV and non-IPV clients.

  • Provide crisis intervention to meet the urgent physical and emotional needs of CR callers of domestic violence survivors and their significant others and other services related to clients and/or survivors of domestic violence or sexual assault .   
  • Assist the CR callers & Walk-in survivors of domestic violence and their significant others seeking support and assistance with developing a safety plan, explaining program services, providing information and referrals, or other counseling and support.  
  • Facilitate the CR callers & Walk-in survivors of domestic violence and their significant others in accessing the assistance they request from service institutions such as DV Court System, Police Department, DCFS, etc.  
  • Provide criminal justice advocacy, accompanying the CR’s caller & Walk-in survivors of domestic violence and their significant others to the local police departments to provide support and act as the liaison between victim and police personnel, as warranted.  
  • Complete the Intake screening of callers & Walk-in survivors if they become eligible clients for direct services. 

Informing & Helps the CR callers & Walk-in survivors of domestic violence understand their rights and the legal remedies available under Illinois Domestic Violence Act (IDVA).

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • The DV Phone Intake Worker & Walk-in survivors is responsible for providing telephone support and conducting intake, crisis intervention, individual counseling, case management, community referrals to survivors, and other client-related services to survivors of domestic violence or sexual assault.
  • Provide crisis intervention to meet the urgent physical and emotional needs of CR walking of domestic violence survivors and their significant others services as determined by client and agency needs.
  • Screens schedules, and enrolls potential clients into the domestic violence services program and engages domestic violence survivors in trauma-informed services.
  • Provides individual as determined by client and agency needed. This work includes but is not limited to the development of a safety plan for the survivor and their children for IPV and Non-IPV.
  • Informs clients about AVN – Automated Victim Notification.
  • Provides information of the Crime Victim’s Compensation Program.
  • Receives calls from domestic violence survivors and others seeking support and assistance.
  • Provides callers & Walk-in survivors with information, emotional support, safety planning and referrals/information.
  • Maintains case documentation and submits necessary information to the Domestic Violence Program Director for statistical reporting.
  • Responsible for waiting list and works with DV. Program Manager and counselor staff coordinate counseling schedule to meet client and agency needs.
  • Completes all required FSS reports – VCVA, VOCA, and VAWA grants and others
  • Enters data into INFONET database general and statistical reports.
  • Participates in on-call rotation to respond to survivors seeking assistance.
  • Provides child care as needed.
  • Participate in other duties as assigned to achieve by program or agency events as needed or required.

Perform other duties as assigned to achieve the program goals and objectives for this position and participate in other duties for agency events as needed or required.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

This position requires public speaking; familiarity with Domestic Violence Court System, Child support, and entitlements; sensitivity to the needs of victims of violent crimes; and the ability to work flexible hours. 

 

EDUCATION:

  • Bachelor’s degree in social work, psychology or related field. 
  • 40-Hour training in domestic violence must be completed within three months of hire.

 

EXPERIENCE:

At least two years of experience providing counseling services to individuals and groups preferred; experience in the field of domestic violence preferred. 

 

COMPUTER AND SOFTWARE KNOWLEDGE – PC literate with experience in word and Excel processing.

LANGUAGES – Bilingual- Bicultural, Spanish/English capability is also required.

Fluent in oral, reading and writing in Spanish required.
