ADULT EDUCATION

FAMILY LITERACY

Family Literacy is a comprehensive program that centers the value of education for the whole family unit. The program typically meets 12:30-2:30pm on Monday-Thursday. Parents attend class while children participate in early childhood education activities in childcare. If you are an immigrant with young children (ages 0-5 years), family literacy might be the right community for you to join!

Family literacy has five key components. Participants attend all five components:

1) English Class: Study English! Tuesday & Wednesday 12:30-2:30pm + Thursday 12:30-2:00pm.

2) Parent Education: Keep learning through workshops on various topics: mental health, leadership, socio-emotional development, and more. Mondays 12:30-2:30pm.

3) Child Education: Trained caretakers implement Early Childhood Education curriculum with the little ones while parents are in class.  Monday - Thursday 12:30.

4) Community Activities: During community activities, parents and children come together as a community to share and apply what they are learning together. Weekly on Thursdays, 2:00-2:30pm & field trips, parties, and community events as planned!

5) Library Visits: Families will become very familiar with the Chicago Public Library system through our partnership with the Edgewater Branch. Regular visits to the library are scheduled in addition to regular visits from the children’s librarian. All participants will obtain and use library cards.
